COVID-19’s Impact on Home Care

Though the COVID-19 pandemic places more demands on home health care workers, the virus also creates greater demand for home care workers’ services. With recent cases linked to nursing homes, seniors that might otherwise have sought to shelter-in-place in a facility instead are staying in their homes. As a vulnerable population, seniors are limiting their contact with the public at large, which means they need more assistance with daily activities at home. Caregivers’ valuable services are much needed, especially as the state is under order to shelter-in-place.

Coronavirus Continues to Increase Need for Home Care

On March 21, Governor Murphy ordered mandatory shelter-in-place for the entire state. For seniors living alone, this can leave them isolated, unable to complete chores, fearful, and more. Family and friends might be unable to visit to assist. They might even be experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and are unsure what to do. A home care provider can step in and give needed support during this emergency and beyond.

Some nursing homes might become overwhelmed and understaffed in the face of this pandemic. Patients might need to stay with family or return to their homes. But seniors at home often require assistance, whether for a few occasional hours or around the clock.

Hospitals are strained to capacity, canceling non-emergency procedures and care. Home care providers and registered nurses can meet many seniors’ health needs instead.
